Description

For Joomla 5 & 6

The right head tags. On the right pages.

Give each page the extra markup it needs with HeadTag Manager.

Generate social sharing tags automatically for articles and menu pages, or add your own Open Graph tags, structured data and other HTML head markup through Joomla modules. Choose where tags appear without editing your template.

What can you use it for?

Set your social sharing tags

Add Open Graph markup to specify the title, description and image that supported social platforms can use when someone shares your page.

Useful for a homepage, campaign landing page or a product page linked to its own menu item.

Describe your business with structured data

Insert your own JSON-LD markup to describe an organization, local business or other relevant page content.

You supply the markup and select where it belongs. Search appearance depends on the search engine.

Add website verification tags

Place a verification meta tag supplied by a search or webmaster service into your site's head.

Assign it to the homepage or other pages required by that service.

Keep page-specific tags organized

Create separate sets of custom meta or link tags for different sections of your website. Give each set a clear name and manage it as a Joomla module.

Enable, edit or unpublish a set whenever you need to.

How it works

  1. Install the package. It includes HeadTag Manager and the supporting plugins. Check that System - HeadTag Manager is enabled.
  2. Add your tags. Create a new HeadTag Manager site module, set its position to headtag-manager and paste your tags into Custom head markup.
  3. Choose your pages. Use Menu Assignment to select where the tags should appear.
  4. Publish. Leave Insert into head enabled and publish the module. Its markup is added inside the page's , without a visible content block.

Complete feature list

Custom head markup modules

  • Create multiple named module instances for different pages and sections.
  • Insert custom meta tags, link tags, website verification tags and your own JSON-LD structured data.
  • Use Joomla menu assignments: all pages, selected pages, all except selected pages, or no pages.
  • Control category-menu inheritance per module: keep tags on the category and its pagination, or include articles and subcategories sharing that menu item.
  • Respect Joomla access levels, language settings, publication status and publishing dates.
  • Enable or disable head insertion independently for each module.
  • Add markup to the document head without displaying a module block or requiring a template position to be rendered.

Automatic article sharing tags

  • Optionally generate Open Graph title, description, image, article type and absolute routed article URL.
  • Generate tags for all article categories or restrict them to selected categories, with optional inclusion of subcategories.
  • Choose intro text, article meta description, or meta description with intro-text fallback as the description source.
  • Set an optional description character limit that stops at a word boundary; zero means unlimited.
  • Use the article intro image, with optional fallbacks to the full article image and a configured default sharing image.
  • Override an individual article's social title, description and image using configured Joomla custom field IDs.
  • Clean HTML from text, normalize whitespace and handle text entities without double escaping.
  • Support local, root-relative, protocol-relative and HTTP(S) image URLs, including sites installed in a subdirectory; remove image metadata fragments.
  • Optionally include publication and modification dates in ISO 8601 format.
  • Run independently of custom module assignments; no module instance is required for automatic article tags.

Automatic menu-page sharing tags

  • Enable automatic tags for selected menu items or all eligible non-article component menu pages.
  • Use the page title and meta description, with menu-title and menu-description fallbacks, plus website type and the absolute menu URL.
  • Choose a separate sharing picture for each menu item, or select multiple menu items in one image row to share a picture.
  • Add multiple image rows to give different groups of menu pages different pictures.
  • Set a shared Menu sharing image as the fallback for pages without a valid picture in a matching row.
  • Resolve overlapping image groups using the first matching row with a valid picture; existing single-menu selections remain supported.
  • Use the selected menu picture for Open Graph and, when enabled, Twitter Cards, subject to the existing-tag policy.
  • Keep category landing-page tags from carrying over to articles or subcategories with a different menu target.
  • Support category pagination using the menu landing-page URL and normal display tasks.
  • Keep individual Joomla articles under the separate automatic article controls.

Additional metadata and duplicate handling

  • Optionally add site name and locale, using Joomla values or configured overrides.
  • Add an optional numeric Facebook App ID.
  • Generate Twitter Card tags for summary or large-image summary cards, including title, description, image and an optional account handle.
  • Automatically use a summary card when no image is generated.
  • Choose whether to preserve the first existing sharing-tag value or replace it with the generated value.
  • Consolidate duplicates of generated tag names in the rendered head, including tags from templates, modules and other extensions.
  • Leave unmanaged tags unchanged. Duplicate handling applies only to names with a generated value on the current page.

Preview and diagnostics

  • Use the included browser tool to inspect pasted page source and view a text sharing preview.
  • Inspect actual tag values, remaining duplicates and missing core sharing tags.
  • Enable optional diagnostics to see generated candidates, their data sources and duplicate-handling decisions.
  • See whether automatic menu tags were generated or why they were skipped.
  • Process pasted source locally in the browser without uploading it, fetching preview images or executing pasted scripts.

Installation and updates

  • One installation package contains the module, system plugin and installer update-key plugin.
  • Designed for Joomla 5 and 6, with settings preserved during upgrades.
  • Automatic article tags, automatic menu tags and new optional features default to off.
  • Receive purchased updates through Joomla's extension updater using your update key.
  • No purchase key is required to install or run the extension; purchased update access is separate.
  • Uninstall through the HeadTag Manager package in Joomla's extension manager.

Choose automatic tags, custom markup, or both

Enable automatic article and menu tags in System - HeadTag Manager. For custom markup, create modules using the steps above. Existing-tag handling lets you combine these features while choosing which sharing values take priority.

Custom markup is inserted as entered; PHP and content-plugin shortcodes are not executed. Only trusted administrators should edit it. Structured data is supplied by you, not generated automatically.

Automatic menu tags use page metadata and pictures assigned to individual menu items or groups, with an optional shared fallback. Image rows apply only to pages enabled by the menu scope. The plugin does not scan page content for images. External links, headings, separators, edit forms and component actions are excluded. Menu aliases use their resolved target. Check third-party component routing on your site.

Clear Joomla/page/CDN caches after changes. Optional diagnostic data is public in the page source; disable it after checking. The preview is a text illustration, not a guarantee of how a social platform will display a shared link.
